Although cloisonne (cloy-zuh-nay) is now considered a Chinese art, it
did not originate in China; missionaries from central Asia passed on the
techniques during the 1300s. Chinese artisans improved the techniques,
and their beautiful work has been enjoyed by Chinese and foreigners for
centuries.
To make cloisonne various colors of enamel are applied to a base on
which small wires have formed many shapes; the object is fired, and then
