ChineseHuxian Peasant Paintings' Background

Huxian Peasant Paintings come from Huxian, Shaanxi Province, near Xi'an, China.  The style is said to have originated in the late 1950s when Hu County peasants who were building a new reservoir began painting pictures of the work in progress in order to record the work and to inspire themselves to work better.  These first peasant painters did not even have proper paints, but used soot, lime, and the red soil of the area to make paint.  The County Communist Party Committee organized art classes so that professionals could teach these peasants how to paint.

Huxian peasants continued to paint, and during China's 1966-1976 Cultural Revolution their work was shown abroad to prove to the outside world that common, ordinary workers could produce works of art.  Ordinary life was the subject of these paintings, and work was often the focus.  Many of these early paintings were clearly political, with titles like "I Grow Grain and Cotton for our Motherland" and "Never Forget the State after a Good Harvest".

Style
Today, Huxian Peasant Paintings still show the ordinary aspects of people's lives.  But instead of focusing on work and the state, the paintings today explore all parts of daily life.  Festivals, parades, the harvest, music, village traditions, farm animals, winter, kitchen work, and children are all celebrated in these paintings.  The style can be described as primitive, with child-like figures and bright colors which are not always true to life.  These colorful, attractive paintings will encourage you to join the celebration of life.

Original Paintings
We provide authentic Huxian Peasant Paintings created by peasants working in Shaanxi Province.  Other artists often copy the originals (in fact, most peasant paintings sold at tourist sights in China are copies), but when you buy our paintings, feel confident that the artist who created the design has painted it.  After designing the painting, this original artist paints it over and over, though of course small variations exist, making each painting unique.
